GrowingGreat will double impact in inner-city L.A., thanks to Astellas USA Foundation
GrowingGreat is excited and honored to announce that we are expanding our program in low-income areas of L.A. thanks to a generous $23,000 grant awarded by the Astellas USA Foundation.
GrowingGreat launched its inner-city program, From Bean Seeds to Frijoles, in 2016 in partnership with Para Los Niños. The program goal is to teach gardening and nutrition to children through hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities.
The program impacted 1,000 inner-city Los Angeles K-1st graders and their families in 2016. The new phase of the project will take place at two Para Los Niños preschools in Hollywood and Los Angeles and will reach over 2,000 children.
The funds allow GrowingGreat nutrition and STEM educators to work with children, parents, and teachers who live and work in communities where families survive on an annual budget of $16,607. The grant award will also cover materials for school gardens, healthy snacks for families, education materials, and Spanish translation.
GrowingGreat and Para Los Niños will present From Bean Seeds to Frijoles at the National Science Teachers Association conference in Los Angeles in April 2017.
Para Los Niños is a nonprofit social services and education organization dedicated to the success of L.A.’s neediest children and families. For more information please visit: www.paralosninos.org/.
