Kudos From Adults
Students respond to the lessons that are age appropriate and activity-based. Teachers are pleased with the professionalism of the parent volunteers and the limited disruption to their already-crowded curriculum plate.

GrowingGreat’s nutrition lessons educate and inspire children to make informed decisions about food. At the end of Year 1, each child I’d taught wrote me letters filled with substantive knowledge, heartfelt appreciation, and specific changes children had already made to their diets.

I have witnessed first-hand the marvelous way that Growing Great helps our students develop healthy choices and a love of our student garden… We are proud of our mission to teach healthy life styles at our school… Students, parents, and teachers love our partnership with GrowingGreat.
Principal, Grand View Elementary
As someone who has also taught the GrowingGreat nutrition lessons in the classroom for two years, I have also seen first hand the impact that they have on all students. The children are always excited when we come into the classroom, and eagerly raise hands to share what they remember from previous lessons. The curriculum — which repeats concepts in new and engaging ways across a three-year cycle — does a fantastic job of presenting nutrition basics and then building upon them in a grade-level appropriate way… Given my experiences in the classrooms over the past two years, I truly think that the GrowingGreat nutrition curriculum has greatly benefited our students, and by extension, the entire Grant community.

We were so impressed with the quality of the standards-based curriculum, the enthusiasm of the students, the focus on healthy and proper nutrition, and the gardens on the school site… When I became the Superintendent of the Culver City Unified School District, I made certain that the GrowingGreat program expanded and continued. The Culver City Unified School District has been extremely pleased with its partnership with the Growing Great program.

Recently, our 1st and 3rd graders harvested the first crop in their urban gardening experience. Carrots, radishes, swiss chard, lettuce, broccoli, and snap peas thrived in our new garden, and the students sampled and savored their first home-grown salad… In addition, [GrowingGreat’s] nutrition lessons are a curricular highlight for our 4th graders. The classroom experiences in reading nutrition labels, identifying high quality fuels, and preparing and sampling healthy foods are raising their awareness of the power of their own healthy food choices. On behalf of our entire school community, I wish to thank GrowingGreat for providing our students with this high quality, standards-based school garden and nutrition education program. You are inspiring healthy habits that will last a lifetime!
Principal, Loyola Village Elementary School
Since 1999, GrowingGreat has delivered comprehensive school garden and nutritional education programs in our district… GrowingGreat has continued to develop and enrich its scope of offerings… which include programs in farm-to-table food service and classroom nutrition. All of the lessons are designed to support the California Education Code nutrition requirements and competencies, as well as other state and school district grade level standards. Beyond the classroom, GrowingGreat introduces home and community essentials to parents and others through workshops and exciting newsletters… Without exception, GrowingGreat, through its committed management and trained docents, continues to inspire our children, staff, parents and community to embrace and adopt healthy lifestyles. GrowingGreat has been enthusiastically endorsed by the district’s Medical Advisory Board, elementary school administrators, teachers, and the PTAs… Our partnership with GrowingGreat is an important asset that, we hope, remains for many years to come.

GrowingGreat is successful due to its unique approach… They utilize multiple channels — classroom, garden, food service, family and community workshops — to reinforce healthy eating messages at school and at home. The lessons are fun and interactive, and the food sampling makes every lesson like a party while also challenging students to try new, healthier food. And most important, GrowingGreat’s lessons provide the students and their parents with practical “tools” that empower then to make better choices for lifelong health.

For the last 3 school years I have served as the Meadows Elementary GrowingGreat Chair and Docent. I wanted to share with you how your program has affected our family… [We} moved here from the south. Three years later, we are eating so differently. [My daughters] read ingredient and nutrition labels, even on chewing gum. They will not even ask for something if there are artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners of hydrogenation oil in it. We watch our portion and servings sizes, we know why we need to chew our food well… Your program is making a difference. My family and I thank you for creating this program. We have learned so much from the nutrition lessons. GrowingGreat has changed the way we shop, cook, and eat.
GrowingGreat is a wonderful organization that touches all aspects of food… Through their inspiring programs, they teach the importance of food, proper nutrition, and the impact our choices have on the overall well-being of our bodies and the environment. GrowingGreat school programs address these concepts at the crucial time of life when children are developing and establishing life-long habits. Garden activities lay the foundation of their curriculum by involving children in the process of growing, harvesting, eating and selling their own food… Fun, interactive classroom nutrition lessons teach children why and how to make healthy food choices. Family and community participation reinforce what children are learning in schools. Parents are in the loop receiving the same information and tools as the students through workshops, family activities, newsletters and at docent trainings… I applaud the GrowingGreat team for doing a marvelous job delivering vital information to children and adults, and am confident their efforts will have a positive impact on people’s lives today while paving the way for changes benefiting future generations.

I just wanted to share the great success that we are enjoying at Red Hill Lutheran School in Tustin, CA this year. I have used [GrowingGreat’s] fall and spring planting lessons for the past 3 years, but this is the first year for RHLS to experience the wonders of lessons planted solely from seed. Their Learning Garden was built over the summer by parent volunteers, and now grades K-5 are getting ready for their first Salad Harvest Party this month!… I have absolutely loved this school garden curriculum from the first time I read through it. It’s as streamlined as I can find for elementary grades, and the CA Standards based lessons are an easy sell to administration, teachers and PTA!…I’m proud to be connected to such a worthwhile and successful school garden program!
